"I feel that we so badly need a forum where our musicians and music fans can meet new friends, exchange ideas, share information and find out about the happenings in our community," explains {Nassir Mashkouri} in his editorial piece on www.zirzamin.se a new magazine focusing on Iranian alternative music.
In January 2003, Nassir and musician Arash BT (one of the participants in TAMO with the band NABZ) created Interconnect-Iranian.com, the forebear of zirzamin, and "a forum where honest and in many cases authoritative discussions on the subject of alternative music scene in Iran took place." Interconnect-Iranian interviewed various Iranian musicians inside and outside the country. It also built a valuable database of Iranian bands and their seldom heard music.
The project that "started as a hobby had become too big to handle" for the duo, however, and they each went their separate ways in the autumn of 2004. Now, Nassir and Fereshteh Safary, co-editor/ radio production director, have started Zir Zamin. They take their website seriously, "for believing that we have the right to have fun while expressing ourselves through a music that we choose to play or listen to."
