Die Ausstellung „Crossing Boundaries – Transforming identities“ im
Atelier Vote präsentiert 6 Positionen junger iranischer Künstler/innen,
die derzeit in Wien leben, studieren und arbeiten. Im Fokus steht die
kritische Auseinandersetzung mit der komplexen Identitätsthematik, die
speziell in Bezug auf die iranische „Diaspora“ oder „Community“ in
Österreich an Brisanz gewinnt.
Welche Bedeutungsperspektiven bergen vermeintlich fixierte
Begrifflichkeiten wie Heimat,
kulturelle Identität und Nation in einer von Globalisierungstendenzen
gekennzeichneten
Welt wie der heutigen? Resultiert aus dem Akt einer
„Grenzüberschreitung“ die
Transformation von Identität(en)? Und wie äußern sich diese
Verschiebungen und Brüche im Verständnis von personaler und kollektiver
Identität innerhalb der bildenden Kunst? Wie erfolgen Konstruktionen
oder Dekonstruktionen von Identitäten und welche visuellen
Erscheinungsformen können diese annehmen?
6 iranische Künstler/innen aus Wien haben Fragestellungen wie diese in
den Medien
Fotografie und einem gemeinsamen Video verarbeitet. Von besonderem
Interesse ist ihr
grenznomadisches Bewusstsein, das zwischen den verschiedenen kulturellen
Sphären
oszilliert und somit auch in den Exponaten der Ausstellung spürbar ist. Die
grenzüberschreitende Perspektive der Künstler/innen und der äußerst
komplexe Zugang zur (eigenen) Identität vermitteln einen
ausschnitthaften Einblick in interkulturelle Prozesse innerhalb der
zeitgenössischen Kunst und regen zum Nachdenken an.

As Martin Heidegger mentioned, the border can´t be defined as something
where things
come to an end, but, as the Greeks recognized, the boundary is somewhat
from where the
essence of something takes its beginning.

The exhibition "Crossing Boundaries - Transforming Identities" in the
Atelier Vote presents 6 positions of young Iranian artists who currently
live in Vienna to study and work.
Focus and main concern is the critical analysis and controversy with
complex identity issues.
Especially with regard to the Iranian “Diaspora” or “Community” in
Austria this specific topic gathers momentum and brisance.
What meaning and impact is posed on terms like homeland, cultural
identity and nationality in a world at the present day which is marked
by globalization as well as inter-, multi- and transculturality? What
are the effects of crossing boundaries? Is the transformation of
identity/ identities therefore a logical consequence? And in which way
do these discontinuities and shifts of the perception of personal and
collective identity find their expression in visual arts? Which
strategies are there for constructing or deconstructing identity/
identities and what about the visual manifestations?
6 Iranian artists from Vienna have worked up issues like these in the
media of photography and a common video. Of particular interest is their
cross-nomadic consciousness and their oscillation in-between the
different cultural spheres. As a consequence, these connotations and
feelings also are conveyed through their artworks.
The transboundary perspective and the extremely complex access to their
own artist´s
identity provide a fragmentary insight into inter- and cross-cultural
processes in the field of
contemporary art. Furthermore, these works offer more than enough food
for thought and
will animate the visitors to reflect on the meaning of identity in the
world nowadays we all
are living in.
